The order of Poker Hands, which hand wins?
Written by investor on January 30, 2009 – 1:40 pm -
Ever wonder the REAL rules of poker and what hands trump the other hands? Complete listing winning hands.
Five of a Kind
A Five of a Kind is the highest possible poker hand. This hand consists of five cards of the same rank regardless of suit. If more than one player a has Five of a Kind, the higher card value wins, five Aces beats five Kings, which beat Five queens, and so on. A Five of a Kind is only possible when wilds cards are being used.
Royal Flush
A Royal Flush is an Ace high Straight Flush, A-K-Q-J-10. It gets it’s own special name because the Royal Flush is the best natural poker hand. Natural just means the hand is possible without any wild card. See below for the definition of a Straight Flush.
Straight Flush
The Straight Flush is a combination between a Straight and a Flush; clever name isn’t it. A Straight is five cards in sequential order, such as 4-5-6-7-8. In most poker variations an Ace can be either high (A-K-Q-J-10) or low (5-4-3-2-1). A Straight may not wraparound, such as Q-K-A-2-3. This hand would not be a Straight. A Flush is five cards of the same suit. Therefore, a Straight Flush is 5 cards in sequential order that are all the same suit. If you hand had a 6 of clubs, 7 of clubs, 8 of clubs, 9 of clubs and 10 of clubs you would have a Straight Flush, and probably be pretty happy.
Four of a Kind
Four of a Kind is simply four cards of the same rank regardless of suit. If there are two or more hands that qualify, the hand with the higher rank Four of a Kind wins. If you find yourself in a situation where two players have a Four of a Kind with the same rank, then the hand with the highest card outside the Four of the Kind wins. So 4-4-4-4-A would beat 4-4-4-4-9.
Full House
A Full House is a Three of a Kind and a Pair, such as Q-Q-Q-3-3. Ties are broken first by the Three of a Kind, then by the Pair. So Q-Q-Q-3-3 beats 9-9-9-A-A and 9-9-9-A-A beats 9-9-9-Q-Q.
Flush
A Flush is a hand where all of the cards are the same suit. When two or more players have a Flush, follow the rules below for High Card.
Straight
A Straight consists of five cards of any suit in sequential order, such as 5-6-7-8-9. As mentioned in the Straight Flush, an Ace can be either high (A-K-Q-J-10) or low (5-4-3-2-1) but cannot wraparound (Q-K-A-2-3 is not a straight). When two players have Straight the hand with the higher rank high card wins. So 6-7-8-9-10 beats 3-4-5-6-7. If two Straights have the same high card value they split the pot.
Three of a Kind
A Three of a Kind is three cards that have the same rank. If your other two cards are a Pair then you’ve got a Full House not a Three of a Kind (and you should bet more!) If two or more players have a Three of a Kind then the highest rank cards win. If both are the same rank, follow the rules below for High Card.
Two Pair
The Two Pair hand is two distinct Pairs of cards that have the same rank and a 5th card of a different rank. K-K-Q-Q-5 would be a Two Pair. The highest Pair wins ties. If both hands have the same high Pair, the second Pair wins. If both hands have the same set of Pairs, follow the rules below for High Card.
Pair
A Pair is two cards of the same rank with three other distinct cards. Use the High Card rules for tiebreakers.
High Card
High Card is any combination that does not qualify as one of the poker hands above. If no one has a pair or better, then the highest card wins. If multiple people tie for the highest card, then look at the second highest, then the third highest etc. High Card is also used to break ties when other top poker hands have the same rank.

Craps! Now what to do to win at craps?
Written by investor on January 24, 2009 – 1:30 pm -
5 tips for winning at craps. These will work from Las Vegas to Europe.
- Avoid Proposition Bets. Proposition bets are made on single dice roll where the house edge is very high, over 11%.
- Avoid Lay Bets. The most striking feature of these bets is the 5% commission. If you are still eager to place Lay Bets we recommend you to bet in set amounts. Thus you increase you odds a bit.
- Shy away from Buy Bets. 5% commission is also charged on these bets. Although they can lower the house edge even more than the Place Bets they are still risky. If you don’t see any obstacles one of the craps tips says that it is more prifitable to place Buy Bets only on 4 or 10 as these numbers provide the biggest winning advantage (2:1).
- Rarely make Field Bets. These bets are also determined on a single dice roll and are not very beneficial. Even though the 5.5% house edge may seem to be very attractive be careful while making decision in their favor.
- One of the best craps tips is to make Place Bets in Multiple Denominations. By doing this you have the full payout odds. You should wager the numbers 4, 5, 9 and 10 with multiples of $5, while 6 and 8 with multiples of $6. Other wagers will result in uneven amounts which will be further rounded down and used to make even money payout.

Skiing in Vermont? Killington Casinos?
Written by investor on January 19, 2009 – 3:16 pm -
KILLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Vermont’s state auditor is hoping that downhill skiers might turn into high rollers.
Auditor Thomas Salmon said the state should consider putting a casino at Killington — or other resort area — to raise money to repair the state’s crumbling roads and bridges.
But the suggestion is getting a cool reception at the Statehouse and, with casino companies laying off workers because of the recession, the prospect seems like a long shot.
“We are not pursuing that idea,” said Stephen Wark, a spokesman for Gov. Jim Douglas.
The state is facing millions of dollars in budget gaps for this year’s budget and next year’s, and lawmakers have warned that drastic cuts to state spending are in the offing.
Salmon, in a recent letter to legislators, outlined 13 proposals for fortifying state government’s depleted coffers.
“I have attached a candid list of items that need consideration — sooner rather than later. I hope people will recognize these types of opportunities and give you steady support to get them on the table for action,” he said in the Dec. 29 letter.
Among them: “Consider a state-owned casino in a resort area like Killington, with net profits directly to roads, bridges and infrastructure,” Salmon wrote.
It wasn’t the first time a casino gambling proposal was floated as a way of improving the state’s finances. In 1995, Las Vegas developer Eric Nelson proposed a casino in Pownal. The proposal ultimately crapped out.
Neither Salmon nor casino advocate Bill Bauer, who owns The Summit lodge in Killington, have a firm proposal in hand.
But both believe it’s worth considering, given the state’s dire fiscal picture and the Killington area’s existing tourism base.
“Let’s face it, they’ve got plenty of places they could use some extra revenue,” said Bauer, who also chairs the newly created Killington Economic Development and Tourism Commission.
“Here in Killington, we don’t care about the gambling revenue, we just want bodies in our town. If we can fill the beds and the restaurants, that’s all we’re trying to get out of it. We have the infrastructure: We have beds, we have restaurant seats, we have a wonderful ski resort, two championship golf courses right in town. A casino would just enhance the resort experience,” he said.
Others around Killington like the concept, but want more specifics.
Tom Horrocks, a spokesman for Killington ski area, said nobody at the resort had been approached by Salmon. But he said putting a casino in Killington is worth considering.
“Resort towns are already pulling people from other areas. The key is how do you get further into those folks’ pockets? How do you increase the per-visit spending, on a daily basis?” he said.
Skiers interviewed at the mountain Thursday had mixed responses.
“It would diminish the allure of what Vermont stands for, and why people come here,” said Christine McConnell, 36, of Burlington, who was snowboarding at Killington on Thursday.
But Juliana Ferreira differed. “It would be a good idea, because it’s missing something here,” said Ferreira, 22, of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Rev. Tom Grey, spokesman for the National Coalition Against Gambling Expansion, said casinos are bad bets as economic development tools.
They come with side effects, including gambling addiction, crime and other social ills, he said.
“It’s the proverbial 800-pound gorilla. Once it’s in — and especially with the state owning it — you have the state playing the role of the house. Do you really want the state in the business of making losers of its own citizens?”
If lawmakers wanted, they could approve casino gambling with an act of the Legislature, according to Attorney General William Sorrell. But lawmakers are leery.
House Speaker Shap Smith said he hadn’t spoken to any lawmaker who supports it, but that anyone is welcome to introduce a bill if they do.
“I don’t want to comment on whether I think it’s a good idea until I’ve had a chance to talk to the auditor and give him a fair hearing on it,” said Smith, D-Morristown.
